GIFTED KIDS PROGRAMME

The Gifted Kids Programme opened it GKP Rata doors in October 2002 and has been one of the most successful GKP units nationwide with a core of 15 schools who have supported solidly throughout the past seven years. GKP Rata has educated over 400 gifted Hutt Valley students, currently operates 4 days a week and meets 2-3 times a year with an Alumni of past pupils.

GKP was established in 2000 to complement and supplement programmes offered in the mainstream classroom setting.  Students are referred to the programme based on outstanding academic and/or creative performance or potential ability, identified by their school and/or family and following a workshop with the specialist GKP Entry Selection team. The Gifted Kids Programme defines a gifted child, as “ one who has the innate ability to achieve at an exceptional level, in relation to his/her same age peers, in one or more areas. This ability may be demonstrated or potential”.

Students receive extension and acceleration in a differentiated programme to suit their learning needs and strength areas. Talent Development Goals are set annually and a Learning Journal profile is collated over the year to share progress and achievement. Emphasis is placed on students interacting with like-minded peers to experience talent development, abstract and complex thinking skills, and a conceptual curriculum through the exploration and support of their personal social and emotional development.
